Lauren's List: 7 Favorite Children's Christmas Books

One of the things I've loved about leaning into the church calendar is how it extends to the Christmas season. Since traditionally Christmas is celebrated for 12 days starting on December 25th, this gives me extra time to lean into really celebrating. All the work it takes as a parent to make the season magical for the kids takes place in the days leading up to the 25th (and it's worth it, the incarnation is so magical!), so I love that once we get there, I can slow down and enjoy celebrating. I don't feel rushed to take down decorations (or to get them up quite as soon) since we don't plan on taking them down until January 6th.

Additionally, there's more time to celebrate another one of my favorite ways - reading Christmas books as a family! These are our family favorites, ones we've bought and pull out each year with our Christmas boxes to enjoy for the season. There are SO many seasonal books out their filling shelves at your neighborhood box store or library, don't miss the very best ones.

Waiting Is Not Easy! by Mo Willems

Advent is the church season when we lean into waiting. I love how this book captures the challenge and the hope of waiting so well.

Christmas in the Manger by Nola Buck, illustrated by Felicia Bond

This is a perfect board book for little ones who can't last for longer picture books.

Saint Nicholas the Giftgiver by Ned Bustard

I love this rhyming story of the real St. Nick that leaves room for the myth of Santa at the end.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Suess

This is a classic for a reason and my kids have all enjoyed it each season even though we watch the movie version, too.

An Orange for Frankie by Patricia Polacco

A heartwarming picture book everyone loves!

Joy to the World: Christmas Stories and Songs by Tomie dePaola

This is a collection of three books from one of the best children's authors. A great addition to your home library.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson

Before you see the new movie, don't miss the absolute joy and many laughs that comes from reading these 7 delightful chapters with your family. I've read it aloud to our family for three years and counting, by popular request.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Enjoy these reads this Christmastide season.
