Lauren's List: Fantastic Black History Read-a-Louds for 5-10 year olds

This list is by no means comprehensive, but here are five great non-fiction picture books on different aspects of Black history to read aloud and discuss with your 5-10 year-old children. The one about Elijah McCoy was a particular favorite of my two older boys, and a completely new-to-me historical figure to learn about. These are roughly in order of younger to older in reading range.

#1 The Story of Ruby Bridges by Robert Coles, illustrated by George Ford

#2 Henry's Freedom Box by Ellen Levine, illustrated by Kadir Nelson

#3 All Aboard! Elijah McCoy's Steam Engine by Monica Kulling, illustrated by Bill Slavin

#4 Martin's Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, illustrated by Bryan Collier

#5 I Have A Dream by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson

I love the freedom that Geometry dash online gives players through the level editor. Creating your own levels and sharing them with others makes the game more than just a platformer; it becomes a creative community experience.

I tried quite a few naming tools before, but this name generator feels much more practical for games, social profiles, and online communities.

This is such a valuable collection of read-aloud books for children. Stories have an amazing way of helping kids understand history, empathy, and different perspectives while keeping them engaged. I like balancing educational activities with fun ones too, whether it's reading together or sharing a few laughs over Crazy Cattle 3D. Thanks for putting together such a thoughtful and inspiring list!

This inspiring picture book tells the story of Geometry Dash Mae Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space. It encourages children to dream big and pursue their goals despite obstacles.

This is a fantastic list, thank you for putting it together! Reading these aloud with my kids has become such a special, connected time for us. On a personal note, I’ve found that preserving those quiet reading moments is so important for my own soul. I actually use Groovebook to turn my phone photos of the kids curled up with books into a simple little album - it’s not fancy, but flipping through it genuinely helps me relax and reminds me of the joy we share in these pages. It’s been a lovely little practice for our family.
